Madame de Villeneuve-Flayosc (1789). Jean-Louis le Barbier le Jeune (French, 1743-1797). Oil on canvas.
Madame is richly dressed in a lavish silk gown, lined with fur and fine lace. Seated at a small wooden desk with books and writing paper, she holds a pen in her hand; clearly she is of a very wealthy family and well educated. All the fine detail in the painting serves to illustrate her importance in society and her privileged upbringing.
